As far as high-end phones go, the new kid on the block is a no joke. The Android-based Solarin smartphone was officially launched at an event in London today by Israeli startup Sirin Labs.

The company behind the ultra-high-end $14,000 smartphone was founded by Kazakh entrepreneur Kenges Rakishev, Israeli Venture Capitalist Moshe Hogeg, and former McKinsey consultant Tal Cohen, in 2013.

The company's aim was to build a high-tech device that combined the "highest privacy settings, operated faster than any other phone and built with the best materials from around the world". To achieve this, the company raised a $25 million seed fund and went to work.

Sirin Labs forged a partnership with KoolSpan, who helped integrate chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption, the same kind used by military to encrypt their communications.

The encryption is set in motion via a physical switch on the back of the phone. The device also sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with support for 24 LTE bands with the premise of superior WiFi connectivity in comparison to normal phones.

The smartphone also has a 23.8-megapixel rear camera which will display picture via a 5.5-inch IPS LED 2K resolution screen. “Every single design decision and material choice was based on performance and functionality,” says Fredrik Oijer, VP of product at Sirin Labs. The device will be available at select stores in the UK from June 30.
